2009 National Sewing Month Contest Submissions

hm_garrigues_vivien1.JPG - HONORABLE MENTION - Vivien Garrigues I came up with an idea for reusing empty coffee latte containers by turning them into little evening bags. I cover the boxes in fabric, which I first embellish with embroidery and beading. After embellishing, the fabric is hand-stitched over the plastic containers. Holes are made on the sides and lid for a chair tieback (cord with tassels at each end) to pass through, this forms a handle. To finish off the little purses, I cover a piece of cardboard with embroidered fabric and attach this to the lid. A fabric lining is also added. The photos submitted show my ‘HAND-bag’, which has embroidery, beads and silk ribbon embroidery added. The large polymer clay hand bead was purchased. Also shown is my ‘Fish Catchall Bag’, with fish and seed beads and different types of dimensional embroidery. I like the idea that, instead of these plastic boxes laying in a landfill they now go out to dinner, to the theater or parties, as little evening bags!
